CSK’s witty tweet about Chris Gayle is going viral

His previous franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore, also decided against retaining him despite the emotional connect with the fans and his rapport with skipper Virat Kohli.

In the two-day mega auction that concluded today, one talking point excluding the highest bids was the fact that Chris Gayle remained unsold until the last round. The Universe Boss may be a T20 legend and perhaps the most destructive player in the game but because of his age, injury prone body and inconsistency, there were no buyers.

That was possibly the reason for why his previous franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore, also decided against retaining him despite the emotional connect with the fans and his rapport with skipper Virat Kohli. It wasn’t until the third and final round of players in the auction that Kings XI Punjab decided to get him for the base price of 2 Cr.

However, Chennai Super Kings, who were saving up till the end to buy players when other teams had maxed their purses out had something to say about not retaining him. It was also evident that on Day 1, they were only going after players that had experience and were aged above 30. By that logic, many thought that Gayle would be perfectly fit for them especially when they were yet to invest on a hard-hitting opener.

Why they did not target Gayle in the Auction

The CSK Twitter handle which is known to be extremely witty and interactive came up with a witty joke and perhaps a dig at him for not crossing 30. It is open to interpretation what not crossing 30 meant since it could be about the number of runs he has scored due to his inconsistent form or simply his age even though he is well over 30.

They tweeted, “He hasn’t crossed 30! So the team has decided against him” to someone who asked them why they weren’t targetting Gayle in the auction. The tweet was enough to go viral and be re-tweeted incessantly, creating a buzz that CSK not only possess great players but also a great sense of humour.
