In about a few year’s time whenever there will be any talks about the year 2019, there will be one name that will be constant in almost every discussion – Ben Stokes. For, he was a messiah for England in the summer of 2019. And, it was not only in one instance but every time English needed its big all-rounder to step-up, he did. And, didn’t he choose the biggest stage of them all: World Cup final and the Ashes.

It was an incredible summer of cricket for England. It was always expected to be that way; ain’t it? The World Cup was being staged at home after a period of 20 years. For the first time since 1992, they were walking into a tournament as real contenders. And, why wouldn’t they?

After what was one of the lowest points of English cricket courtesy their dastardly group-stage exit from the 2015 World Cup, England- under Eoin Morgan- had embarked on a path of white-ball redemption. The conservative hit-and-miss approach of English white-ball set-up finally gave way to a fearless approach; one that paved way for them to become one of the most fearsome teams in the world.

Yet! It does not feel like England would have gone to win the World Cup and then subsequently draw the Ashes, had it not been for that man: Yea! Ben Stokes. Coming into a precarious position on both occasions, Stokes showed his skills, talent, perseverance, drive and off-course his steely temperament, to play two of the greatest and most significant under-pressure innings.

While the all-rounder top-scored with an unbeaten 98-ball 84 in the World Cup final, his 153 not out in the 3rd Ashes Test where he accumulated more than 75 runs for the 10th wicket with Jack Leach [1*] to help England achieve the impossible and assume parity in the series was right out of the top-drawer.

As a result of his heroics, accolades continue to galore on Ben Stokes. The English all-rounder has been nominated by his fellow players for the Natwest PCA Players ‘Player of the Year’ award. But, what is more, intriguing is the all-rounder got the news via his children.

In a video posted by England’s Professional Cricketers’ Association [PCA], Stokes’ son Layton [7] and daughter Libby [4] are seen holding cards, after which the 4-year-old reads out “Daddy, you have been an amazing cricketer all summer. We are so proud of you. You have been nominated for the Players’ Player of the Year,” Layton read.
