South Africa went in for a total overhaul of its administrative system and team management as well. The team which was on a five-match losing streak in Test matches, came back in style against England in the first Test match at Centurion winning it comfortably, kickstarting Mark Boucher’s coaching stint with a win.

The Proteas called on for some experience in coaching staff as Jacques Kallis was named the batting coach of the team, while Charl Langeveldt was named the bowling coach, with former skipper Graeme Smith taking over as the Director of Cricket South Africa.

The Proteas handed debuts to a couple of new faces and one of those was Rassie van der Dussen in the Centurion Test match and he showed his calibre immediately with a brilliant half-century on debut and then hit another in the 1st innings of the second Test match.

Jacques Kallis is regarded as one of the best all-rounders

Jacques Kallis is by far the best batsman produced by South Africa post its apartheid period. He scored 13289 runs in 166 Tests and 11579 runs in 328 ODI matches. In addition to his batting, he also picked 292 Tests and 273 ODI matches, putting him alongside Sir Gary Sobers as perhaps the best all-rounder of all-time.

Kallis carried the South African batting with AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla playing around him, getting the freedom to play their shots because they knew the Cape Town-born all-rounder was on the other end to see off the dangerous bowlers. Dale Steyn, who played for almost a decade with Kallis and sometimes shared the bowling duties with him as well, holds him in high regard.

Therefore it was evident when Steyn took to Twitter and shared photos of Kallis and Van der Dussen hitting a pull shot on one leg in a similar manner and praised the new batting coach’s skills captioning the photo as, “JK showing his batting coaching skills fast! @jacqueskallis75 @Rassie72”

Meanwhile, in the second Test match between Proteas and three lions, South Africa fell short of England’s first innings total of 269 despite half-centuries from Dean Elgar (88) and Van der Dussen (68), as they made 223. James Anderson picked 5/40, while Broad and Curran picked two wickets each.
