Ball-tampering in cricket is a horrendous crime and several cricketers have been slapped with bans, fines and other punishments over the years. However, despite the penalties, cricket leave no stone unturned and have continued using the strategy, which is both against the law and the spirit of the game. Australian cricketers got themselves tangled in several controversies over the years.

The third Test between South Africa and Australia at Port Elizabeth is currently underway and has already witnessed a couple of massive controversies. David Warner was given a harsh send-off by a fan who was suspected to have been sitting at the Members Stand. However, the most glaring controversy sparked during the post-lunch session of the third day’s play.

The disgraceful act by Bancroft

Cameron Bancroft was seen hiding a sandpaper inside his pocket, which is suspected to have been used for tampering the ball. Meanwhile, Darren Lehmann, the head coach of Australia was quick to spot that the act has been caught on camera. Soon after, he used the walkie-talkie and communicated the message to Peter Handscombe.

Handscombe passed the message to Bancroft after which the latter tried to hide the object. The action has been severely bashed by commoners and experts from every nook and corner of the world. The incident is most likely to be looked into by the match-referee Andy Pycroft. It will be interesting to see the new developments surrounding the case.

Steyn’s opinion on Twitter

Meanwhile, Dale Steyn, who is present at the venue, also shared his views on the social media platform. In his tweet, he brought forth the role Darren Lehmann and Steve Smith might have played in Bancroft’s shameful act on the field. Replying to Kevin Pietersen’s tweet, here is what he wrote, “Bud you know nothing in professional sport is done without the consent of your captain and coach… Tough times ahead.”
