South African T20I squad for the three-match series against England was bolstered by the addition of former pace spearhead and one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time – Dale Steyn. This is the first time that the premier fast bowler will return to South African colors since he last represented his country against Sri Lanka last summer.
Steyn missed out on last year’s 50-over World Cup after he picked up an injury during his stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. The fast bowler retired from Test cricket last August in order to prolong his white-ball career and possibly represent South Africa in the T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia later this year. And, now Steyn has asserted that he will take a call on his career post the Marquee event.
“Is there another T20 World Cup? Next year? Wow, that’s short-lived. So if we win it, we only win for a year. This one would be a nice one to go to and then finish off and reassess after the end of this year and then I will kind of figure out what I want to do.” Dale Steyn was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Dale Steyn wants to play till the burning desire to play at the highest level cease to exist
Dale Steyn made his way back into the team on the back of some solid performances in the Mzansi Super League and during his brief stint in the Big Bash League. The champion fast bowler revealed that he still loves cricket and it is the only thing that he can think of doing at this stage.
“I love playing cricket. I wake up every day and I can’t see myself doing anything else right now. I am just putting my hand up and saying I’m available, pick me, don’t pick me and then we’ll see how it goes to the World Cup” Dale Steyn said.
Steyn said that as long as he has that unrelenting desire to still play at the highest level, he is going to continue to keep doing that.
“As long as that drive is there to still play at the highest level, and get batters out and fox them and outsmart them and all that kind of stuff if I can do that, I am going to continue to do that. And then once I can’t do that anymore, well once I decide that I don’t want to do it anymore, then I’ll be done,” he said.
