Darren Gough’s cricket career in numbers: The cricket world remembers former English pacer Darren Gough as a dazzling bowler who despite of all the weight related adversities created a special place in the hearts of millions of fans with his jaw-dropping achievements on the field. He might not be as tall as an ideal fast bowler should be or he might not have the best physique in the world, but yet the weight of his towering achievements makes him a remarkable player indeed. Gough was the strike bowler of the national side and a much sought after bowler after the likes of Ian Botham and Bob Willis.

He had the audacity to inspire his team-mates. An absolute live-wire on the field, Gough could pull off magical things on the field and was masterly adept at using his abilities to the very best. He is still renowned as the first and foremost proponent of reverse-swing in England.

Today, we celebrate the 45th birthday of this dynamic English bowler by presenting Darren Gough’s cricket career in numbers:

1994 – The year in which this Barnsley born bowler made his international debut. He made his ODI and Test debut against New Zealand in 1994 respectively and impressed everyone with his dazzling performances.

1 – He is the first English bowler to take 200 wickets in ODIs. In September 2004, he achieved this feat.

2 – The position occupied by Gough as far as taking highest number of ODI wickets by an English bowler is concerned. He grabbed 235 scalps in 159 ODIs.

229 – The number of wickets taken by him in Test cricket. He played 58 Test matches and took as many as 229 wickets.

4 – The position occupied by Darren if we talk about English bowlers with highest number of international wickets. Gough scalped 466 wickets across all the formats of the game.

100 – The number of years after which an English bowler took Hat-trick in Ashes cricket. In 1999, Gough created history against Australian’s in Sydney Test where he claimed the wickets of Ian Healy, Stuart MacGill and Colin Miller in consecutive deliveries.

23 With Hat-trick against Australia in 1999, he became the 23rd cricketer to take Hat-trick in Test cricket.

11 – The number of Fifers taken by this English pacer in international cricket. He took 9 fifers in Tests while 2 came in ODI’s.

20332 – The number of deliveries bowled by him in international cricket. He bowled 11,821 balls in Tests, 8,470 in ODIs and 41 in T20Is respectively.

65 – The number of runs he scored in his debut Test innings against Black Caps in 1994. It remained his highest individual score in international cricket as well.

0 – The number of fifties scored by him in ODI cricket. His highest individual score in ODI is 46 runs.

1464 – The number of runs accumulated by Gough in international cricket. He scored 855 and 609 runs in Tests and ODIs respectively. He didn’t get to bat in 2 T20I matches he played.

38 – The number of catches taken by Gough in international cricket. He took 25 catches in ODIs and 13 in Tests.

218 – The number of matches in which Darren represented England. He is stationed at 12th position as far as playing most number of international matches by an English player is concerned.

6 – The number of Man-of-the-Match awards won by Gough in international cricket. He was adjudged Player-of-the-match 4 times in ODIs and 2 times in Tests.

1 – The number of Player-of-the-Series award won by him in his career which spanned for 12 years. He won this award in the 3-match ODI series against South Africa in 1998. He never won the Man-of-the-Series award in Test cricket.

1453 – The number of wickets taken by Gough in Domestic cricket. He claimed 855 and 598 wickets in his First-Class and List-A career respectively.

2008 – The year in which Gough took retirement from competitive cricket. Earlier he had taken retirement from international cricket in 2006.
