Australian coach Darren Lehmann is currently hoping that the International Cricket Council (ICC) intervene in order to prevent player burnout. In spite of winning the Tri-Series 2016, the Aussies had to tend to a few injuries, including that of David Warner and skipper Steve Smith. Lehmann has also gone on to state that the mini-IPL, scheduled to take place later this year, will go on to cause player burnout.

It was reported that the Australian players who played all three formats in 2015 had spent almost 280 days overseas. However, Cricket Australia also announced that these players, in particular, would certainly be given a break for the same. However, with the contracts in the Indian Premier League proving to be supremely lucrative, the players continued to play their cricket.

Lehmann also added that it was a ‘tough conundrum’ for the national selectors as many cricketers give up playing for their countries in favor of playing domestic T20 cricket that offers large sums of money.

“If it keeps going like this, with players playing IPL as well, they are inevitably going to break down,” Lehmann told Australian media on Friday.

“Hopefully, changes will happen at the ICC and then you will see a refined schedule which will be better.” “If you look at a two-year cycle, all of our players have had to come home at some point,” he said.

“It’s not so much the cricket, it’s the travel to these places. You’re on the road, you have training and all that stuff,” he said.

The ICC is currently considering the introduction of a two-tiered test Championship and a one-day league, which would go some way to lightening the workload.
