Watching their son perform on a public stage is both an experience of pride and nervousness for most people. For former Australian batsman and coach Darren Lehmann, too, the rules hold true. Dad Lehmann was too nervous to see his son Jake bat in the dying moments of a game in the Big Bash League but the latter came out with flying colours to see his father – beaming with pride.

It all happened in the match between defending champions Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday. The Strikers were asked to bat first by Renegades captain Tom Cooper and they were 4 for 167 in the 20th and final over of the innings when Jake Lehmann came out to bat. It’s not something new for the left-hand middle-order batsman but Darren, who was in the commentary box at that time with fellow commentator Adam Gilchrist, it was too nervous a moment to handle.

“I can’t watch,” said the senior Lehmann to see his son coming out to bat as he turned his head backwards, leaving Gilchrist in splits. “It’s just three balls, mate. Come on,” the former wicket-keeper tried to cheer up the nervous father but the latter still was not ready to see how his son negotiates the three remaining balls and asked Gilchrist to tell him how it goes from there.

Here is the video of Lehmann commentating:

But Jake had a big surprise in store for them as he smashed the very first delivery he faced over the deep mid-wicket for a six. The shot left Gilchrist ecstatic and he had a high-five with Darren, who also was overjoyed by his son’s performance. Jake remained unbeaten on seven from two of the three final deliveries he faced.

The final result of the game, however, did not go in favour of the Strikers as the Renegades, despite losing half their side for just 82, overhauled the competitive target of 175 with five balls to spare.
