After the 5-match ODI series between the Windies and England ended up in a 2-2 draw, the focus now shifts on the T20 Internationals. The West Indies team has named Jason Holder their captain for the T20I series ahead of Carlos Brathwaite.

On the other hand, England have recalled opener Dawid Malan, presenting the left hander with another chance to cement his place in the team. Malan was axed from the England’s Test team after August last year. He had played 15 Tests, scoring 724 runs with a highest of 140 runs. In 5 T20Is, Malan has made 250 runs with a best of 78 runs.

Looking for a longer rope to prove himself

The 31-year-old believes that he can deliver the goods for the England team if given a longer rope and his strike rate of 150.60 in T20Is shows that Dawid Malan can do much harm to the opposition at the top of the order. “It’s never easy being dropped, it’s your dream to play international cricket and you think it’s gone at that time,” he told Sky Sports.

Malan termed his exile from the team tough and also mentioned that from his point of view, he should have played more given that he has a strike rate of 150 and averages 50. “That’s just the strength and depth of this white-ball team. To get into it and stay in it is tough. Any opportunity you get, you have to make it count or somebody else takes that spot,” he said.

Malan had made his debut in T20Is against South Africa in 2017 and scored 78 off 44 balls. After that sparkling start to his career, Malan followed it up with a string of good scores- 50, 10, 59 and 53, all coming outside England. His downfall came against the home series against India, which England lost 1-2 to the visitors.

Tag of a batsman only suitable for overseas batting

Dawid Malan is also confused as to why he has been type casted as a batsman for overseas touring only and took up the matter with his former Middlesex teammate Ed Smith, who has now turned national selector.

“It’s obviously hard when you play your whole career in a country to be told you’re suited somewhere else, but the way he explained it to me made more sense than the way it came across in the press. It’s pretty simple: score big runs, play the right way and if there’s a spot available, he could come knocking.” Malan added.
