Australia just could not make use of the momentum that was with them following their win in the second Test over India. The world number one Test side thoroughly outplayed the hosts to beat them by 137 runs in the third Test. The massive win helped India take an unassailable lead in the four-match series as well as retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India had won the last Test series between the two teams 2-1 in 2017.

Right from the toss till Ishant Sharma accounted for Nathan Lyon to wrap up the game, almost everything went India’s way. In the first innings, India piled up a massive score of 443 for 7 before the bowlers bowled out Australia for a paltry 151 to give the side a huge 298-run lead. India suffered an inexplicable collapse in the second innings but their huge first-innings lead helped them set Australia an improbable target of 399. In reply, Australia were all out for 261 in the first session on the final day.

And one can easily say that the margin of the defeat would have been much bigger if not for Pat Cummins. The right-arm pacer came up with arguably his best performance in international cricket but his heroic effort went in vain. It was him who had taken both the Indian wickets that had fallen on day one of the game. He went on to take one more to finish the innings with 3 wickets.

But it was his performance in India’s second innings that really made the match interesting and even revived Australia’s fading hopes. In the second innings, the speedster tore apart the visitors by picking up a career-best 6 for 27. He also remarkably top-scored for Australia with the bat, with his second innings knock the side’s only half-century for the match. It was his knock that helped Australia push the game to the final day. But his teammates could not complement his performance as Australia are now in danger of losing a Test series against India at home for the first time.

Cummins’ message

Following his heroics in the game, Cummins came up with a beautiful message for the visitors. Taking nothing away from Virat Kohli & Co., the Australia star said India showed why they are the best Test team in the world. He also expressed his desperation over turning his team’s fortunes, tweeting:

“India were too good in Melbourne and showed why they are ranked #1. Desperate to turn it round in Sydney and I think 2-2 would be a great effort against a very good side. Can’t wait.”
