Dhaka Premier League Winners List From 2013 to Present

The Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League which is also known as the Dhaka Premier League is a club List A tournament in Bangladesh. Every season it is organised in the 50-over format but in the year 2021, it is held in T20 format to prepare the players for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

The history of DPL is quite long as the first season was played back in 1974-75. Since then, it has been the premier club cricket completion in Bangladesh. However, the tournament gained the list A status very late with the 2013-14 edition. With that, it superseded the National Cricket League One-Day as the country’s main List A competition.

Before, in the years from 1974-75 to 2011-12, Abahani Limited were the most successful team winning the championship a total of 17 times. Other major winners include Mohammedan Sporting Club and Biman Bangladesh Airlines who won the tournament nine and five times respectively. The tournament was not held in 2012-13 and from 2013-14, it was organised in the List A format after gaining the required status.

The DPL tournament is played in the round-robin format, followed by playoff rounds among the top six teams for the championship, and within the lowest three teams to determine relegation. There are 12 participating teams in total, changing each season with promotion and relegation. Among these, the two lowest-finishing teams are demoted to the second division for the next season while the top two teams in the second division are promoted.

The process of allocating players to the clubs also varies from season to season, but it has elements of the lottery as well. Players have also been seen changing clubs between two seasons. Till the 2019-20 season, most of the teams included players from other countries out of Bangladesh in their squad. In 2013-14, a total of 82 foreign players featured in the Dhaka Premier League.

However, from 2015-16, only one foreign player has been allowed in the playing eleven, although the clubs are allowed to have several overseas players on their list. In 2015-16, a total of 36 foreign players featured in the league which included 22 Indian players and 10 from Sri Lanka. In the 2019-20 completion, foreign players were excluded from taking part.
