India pulled off an incredible whitewash of hosts Sri Lanka as they clinched the Test series 3-0. Virat Kohli and his men were massively dominant throughout the series as they crushed the Sri Lankans comprehensively. The Lankans were handed their second consecutive innings defeat on Monday at Pallekele by 171 runs which marked the end of the series.

Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal termed the series as the worst of his career. The Sri Lankans were no match to the number one ranked Test side in the world, India, with their depleted line up and horrific form. It was a cakewalk for the visitors as they registered their first clean sweep away from home.

Dinesh Chandimal was appointed as the skipper of Sri Lanka to change the fortunes of the team. Previous skipper Angelo Matthews resigned from the spot after a disappointing ODI series loss to Zimbabwe earlier this year. But the change of captaincy did not go well for both the team and Chandimal in his 39 matches long Test career.

What Chandimal said:

“Toughest series no doubt in my career,” Chandimal told reporters. “We were not able to take the games to five days. There have been four-day Tests and three-day Tests. Worst series ever.” added the captain.

“Credit goes to India. They have played outstandingly well in the series… losing within two and half days you cannot give any excuses.” said Chandimal.

Sri Lanka who performed a whitewash over the mighty Aussies last year at home were outclassed by the Indians in all departments. The Indians justified their position as the number one side in the ICC Test rankings by dealing with the Sri Lankans with ease. There were major concerns in the Lions’ squad as Asela Gunaratne, Rangana Herath and Nuwan Pradeep fell victim to injury during the series.

“I would say the main concern is injuries. The Australia series, we had everyone fit,” he said.

“I don’t want to give excuses. We have to perform better than this,” Chandimal concluded, with an apology to the home fans.
