Indian railways have a reputation of offering insipid services for a number of years now. With two accidents in a space of four days, the railways have reached their lowest ebb and have shocked millions of people around the country including former Indian opener Virender Sehwag.

Known to be a very avid and cheeky tweeter, Sehwag was unhappy with how the railways function. The train – Kafiyat Express, derailed near Acahlada and Pata villages in the Auraiyya district of the state Uttar Pradesh at 2.40 am on Wednesday morning injuring 70 people. It hit a dumper at a crossing which resulted in the derailment of as many as 10 coaches. The tragedy resulted in the cancellation and diversion of several trains. “Seven trains have been canceled and five have been diverted,” an official was quoted as saying by IANS.

Emotional Sehwag tweets in dismay

The casualties were rushed from the scene for medical aid with over a dozen taken to a medical facility in Auraiyya and the rest to Saifai Medical College. According to a district administration officials, the rescue operations are underway and focus in on to reach out to the trapped passengers in the coaches. This incident occurred just four days after the horrific mishap on Saturday which killed 22 people and injured 156 on board on the Kalinga Utkal Express train. Sehwag took to Twitter to express his concerns on the Indian Railways inefficiency. He highlighted that they have a reputation of arriving late and now they are even struggling to keep on track.

Sehwag’s cry of the lack of compassion for human lives is the harsh truth. The railways must improve their infrastructure to avoid such mishaps in future as the trains are considered as the best route of transportation between different cities in India. Adequate measures should be taken to improve the service and quality of the system.
