The 2019-20 edition of the Ranji Trophy came to an end with Saurashtra finally crossing the final hurdle in their fourth attempt in the past eight seasons. In the end, it was a fruitful culmination of years of hard work, grit, patience, and perseverance with the Jaydev Unadkat-led outfit basking in the glory of being the best domestic side in India’s First-Class cricket.

Skipper Jaydev Unadkat was one of the spearheads in what was a triumphant 2019-20 campaign for Saurashtra. Unadkat toiled away relentlessly and broke several records as the season progressed. The southpaw claimed 67 wickets at an average of 13.23- the most by a fast bowler in the history of Ranji Trophy and missed out by a whisker from eclipsing Ashutosh Aman’s record for the most number of wickets in a single season.

Jaydev Unadkat’s presence of mind

Unadkat saved his best for the crunch moments- whether it was the second innings of the semi-final where he claimed seven Gujarat wickets or his game-changing spell on the fifth morning of the finals when he dismissed Anustup Majumdar before effecting a brilliant run-out of Akash Deep.

That run-out by Unadkat was a testification of what presence of mind- or the lack of it, as was the case with Akash Deep- can do, especially in crunch situations. It all happened in the 153rd over when the batsman was beaten by a Unadkat delivery.

Sensing an opportunity of a run-out, wicket-keeper Avi Barot narrowly missed the direct-hit. The ball ricocheted to Jaydev Unadkat, who- courtesy his brilliant presence of mind- threw the ball at the stumps. The Saurashtra players appealed and in the replay, it was confirmed that Deep did not any part of his foot behind the popping crease.

The BCCI domestic social media handle took to Twitter to share the video of the same and hailed Undakat’s brilliant presence of mind.

“Presence of mind, Direct hit, Wicket, Watch how Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Unadkat ran out Akash Deep in the #RanjiTrophy 2019-20 #Final,” BCCI domestic tweeted.

Unadkat came up with a cheeky reply to the same and wrote, “Does that count to my wickets tally of the season by any chance?”
