Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant knock of 96 from 57 balls helped Delhi Daredevils (DD) pull off a last over thriller against the Gujarat Lions on Wednesday night.

The promising talent’s heroics added life into the Delhi campaign, what otherwise was a dead rubber of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer displayed some fabulous strokeplay and reached his highest IPL score but unfortunately missed out on a well-deserved hundred.

Currently, Daredevils stand sixth in the points table with 10 points and are out of contention to qualify for the playoffs. Over the years in IPL, the franchise from Delhi has always been the one who has never quite kept the core of the side the same.

Continuing the trend, they went into the tenth edition of the league banking on a bunch of youngsters to deliver the goods. The young-guns did come to the rescue of the team at times but could not take them through to the final stage.

While many people have heaped praise for some outstanding performance from the youngsters, former India opener Aakash Chopra suggested that not having too many experienced campaigners in the team cost Delhi this time around.

He went on Twitter to post: “You get brilliance & inconsistency from youth. #DD rode on their brilliance but didn’t invest in experience to cover for their inconsistency.”

To this, a Rahul Dravid fan was pretty quick to point out that the Delhi Daredevils mentor has always backed the youngsters as he wrote: “That’s what DRAVID believes in & experiments with- the Process of Growing Up for the youngsters important for him than the product-winning!

However, Chopra was quick to remind the fan that the Indian Premier League is a tournament that is about winning and losing and not just helping youngsters grow.

Though the youngsters have shown brilliance at times, DD have failed to qualify for the playoffs yet again.

They had made it to the playoffs in the 2012 edition which has been their best performance in the cash-rich league so far.
