Virat Kohli, India’s most successful Test captain ever, is known for his fearlessness. He wears his heart on his sleeve and makes sure that its the opponent who has fear of losing in their eyes. Since the day he has taken the Test captaincy from MS Dhoni, he has shown his aggressive and never lose hope attitude on the field.
Indian captain’s Test figures speak for themselves as he has captained in 55 Tests for India and has a 60% win record with 33 wins against his name. The added pressure for being the captain of the nation which always had the craziest fans out of all has improved his performance as he averages 61.21 in those Tests with 20 eye-pleasing centuries.
Kohli shared his success mantra with his teammate Mayank on BCCI.tv, where he said as a leader, drawing a Test match, is the last option for him. The only thing he thinks about is winning on all 5 days.
I would not compromise: Virat Kohli
“I would not compromise on wanting a result in any situation, drawing a game for me should be the last option,” Virat Kohli told Mayank Agarwal in a video interview posted on BCCI.tv, when asked about his X-factor as a captain.
“Say we need 300 on the last day and opposition gives you that target. I would say to the guys let’s go for it. It’s 100 runs in a session and even if you lose a couple of wickets and score 80 in the first session we can make up for it by scoring 120 runs in the final session,” the Indian skipper mentioned.
The no.2 batsman in ICC Test rankings, captained India for the first time in 2014 when regular captain MS Dhoni was out due to injury and he scored a century in both the innings. Like Kohli mentioned, India did need more than 300 on the last day but instead of going for a draw, Kohli pushed the team for a win by being the leading run-scorer. Though in the course of that India lost the game but that Adelaide Test is often regarded as one of the best matches ever.
The 31-year-old batsman also mentioned that how fear of losing can be the most negative thing for a cricketer. His positive mindset has also helped India in winning their first Test series Down Under in Australia.
