It was just a slice of luck for Hyderabadi youngster Bhagath Verma when he was called up as a replacement for an injured player to join the India U19 team to tour England. The teenager was going through a tough period on and off the pitch and this maiden national call-up can make amends for his struggle.
He will join the under-19 ranks as they are scheduled to play two Tests and five ODI’s in England. Bhagath had a good run in the domestic circuit. Under the guidance of former HCA secretary K. John Manoj, the off-spinner made rapid strides in his bowling and wickets came his way plenty last season.
Surprise call
“I have been just hoping for this call given the performances in the Cooch Behar Trophy last season when I took 35 wickets from six matches to be the fifth highest bowler in the championship,” he said while talking to Sportstarlive.
Bhagath’s mother had been a pillar of support for his son and he owes his success to her. “I owe everything in my life to my mother (Uma Devi who works in Bharti Cements). But for her sacrifices I would not have reached this far,” said Bhagath.
He learnt the tricks of his trade from his coach and mentor Mohd Iqbal at Mehboob College High School. From shaping his talent in the humble grounds of his locality to earning a dream call to play under-19 cricket with the national team, Bhagath’s journey is like any other cricketer in India who wants to make his mark at the national level.
“My next dream is to play for India in the World Cup (Under-19),” said the offie who has also made his mark in Kosaraju CC. Bhagath spoke of Harbhajan Singh as his role model and inspiration. He is also a fan of Ravichandran Ashwin and follows his variations meticulously.
Follows Ashwin
”Yes, I am really working hard to master the carom ball. Ashwin sir is a great exponent of that and I will be happy if I can pick a few things watching his bowling videos,” said Bhagath who is now playing for R. Dayanand CC in the HCA League championship.
The U-19 bowler spilled the beans about his seven-wicket haul in the Cooch Behar Trophy. “I rely on my line and length with the top spinner being my stock ball,” he said. That gem of a spell opened a new realm of confidence for him and made him think that he has arrived. “That was the spell which gave me a lot of confidence and after that I never really looked back,” he concluded.
