The first day of proceedings in what is expected to be an important Duleep Trophy 2016 kicked off with 18 wickets falling. While most expected history to be created with the pink ball, the flood lights as well as the venue. However, a few floodlight failures, batsmen falling like nine pins and the pink ball in itself ensured that history was being made only with somewhat of an adverse publicity.

Left-handed batsman Abhinav Mukund was perhaps the only batsman who was able to solve the puzzle of playing with the pink ball. He smashed a valiant 77 and was the only player on the day to cross the threshold of the 50-run mark. However, the fact remained that the seamers on this track thrived. Between them, the quicker bowlers claimed 10 of the 18 wickets that fell on the day.

The India Red innings got off to a torrid start when they lost five of their six top order batsmen to scores of less than 10 runs. At the dinner break on the first day’s play, it was clear that the wicket and the ball were seemingly unplayable for the batsmen as 12 wickets had fallen. The last wicket to fall was that of Robin Uthappa who had fallen to a peach of a delivery from Nathu Singh.

Although the India Green batsmen looked somewhat solid, their solidity was undone by the pace of Nathu Singh. The latter was somewhat Jimmy Anderson-esque by the way he made the ball do the talking. Parthiv Patel, Rajat Paliwal, Suresh Raina, and Saurabh Tiwary were the only ones to go past the score of 10 runs and enter into double digits. At the end of the day’s play, they were at 116/7.

Brief Scores:

India Red: 161 all out (A Mukund 77; S Sharma 4/62)

India Green: 116/7 (S Raina 35; K Yadav 3/26)
