There are very few sights in world cricket right now that are as beautiful as Virat Kohli’s cover drives. The India skipper was in his elements on Friday as the hosts were taking on Bangladesh in the historic day-night Test at the Eden Gardens. Kohli’s batting under the floodlights looked nothing less than poetry in motion.

With the pink ball making things tough for the batsmen, Kohli got off the mark with a thick outside edge. However, it was not at all the pointers of the things that were to follow. The star batsman soon found his rhythm and entertained the jam-packed crowd at the Eden Gardens with some exquisite shots. He brought out his repertoire of classic shots as fans cheered him on.

In fact, Kohli’s shots were so beautiful that they even drew applause from the opposition on occasion. One such incident took place on the fourth delivery of the 17th over when Ebadot Hossain was bowling. Kohli played a stunning cover-drive off Hossain and instead of feeling bad, the bowler was seen clapping as he praised the India superstar.

Virat Kohli achieves record

Virat Kohli, meanwhile, went on to achieve yet another record as he remained unbeaten on 59 at the end of day one. The right-handed batsman became the first Indian captain to score 5,000 Test runs and joined the likes of Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting and other greats of the game. He also broke Ponting’s record of fastest to 5,000 runs as Test captain.

Ponting had taken 54 matches (97 innings) to cross the mark in Tests. Kohli, on the other hand, broke the record in his 53rd match (86th innings) as India captain. Kohli will have a chance to break another Ponting record in the ongoing game. If he manages to get to triple figures in the match, he will overtake Ponting to grab the second spot on the list of captains with most hundreds in the longest format.

Both Kohli and Ponting are currently tied on 19 centuries as skipper on the list. Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith leads the list with an impressive 25 centuries to his name as Test captain.
