English fast bowler Liam Plunkett has been growing in confidence ever since Eoin Morgan took charge of the ODI and T20I sides. He looks a lot more confident about his abilities and has worked terrifically on his variations. He also comes in very handy with the bat on occasion, making him a priceless asset for skipper Morgan.

On Thursday, the English bowlers had a torrid day with Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli running riot in the first ODI. Plunkett had a mediocre outing, who gave away 31 runs in his 6 overs and failed to scalp any wickets. He also managed to break a streak by English bowlers, which started around 18 months ago.

First front-foot no ball bowled in a year

Liam Plunkett over-stepped in the 35th over of the game, which was the first front-foot no-ball bowled by an English bowler in over a year. Interestingly, the last person who bowled a front-foot no-ball was also Plunkett, who over-stepped against India at Cuttack in January 2017.

It was a high-scoring thriller at Cuttack, which saw two legends of the game in Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni take the English bowlers to the cleaners. Plunkett was at the receiving end of some serious hammering and in the process, he over-stepped in that game.

Interestingly, no English bowler had over-stepped for 9,249 balls after that. They bowled only 5 no-balls during this spell, which were either due to full-tosses or some other reasons. A fact that they didn’t overstep for such a long time speaks volumes on how the fast bowlers are training themselves to be as accurate as possible.

Whilst Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Moeen Ali bowled full-toss no balls, Ben Stokes’ delivery was adjourned illegal against Pakistan in Cardiff as 5 fielders were found outside the 30-yard circle. This is one aspect where a lot of other teams are struggling, but interestingly, England bowled just 3 no-balls in 2018.

If a side is not giving away too many extras, it’s obviously a boon for the team and England in that regard has been terrific. Here’s the list of all the players who bowled a no-ball during this 18-month spell.

Note: Liam Plunkett bowled front-foot no-ball in 44th over in Cuttack ODI against India in January 2017. They bowled 9249 balls without a foot no-ball in their last 35 ODI matches. (9249 balls at end of India’s 35th over)
