Pujara has been undergoing a lean phase in Test Cricket for some time now. He had a poor series against South Africa where he averaged just 20.67, scoring 124 runs in three matches and wasn’t picked for the subsequent series against Sri Lanka at home.

Before the 5th Test was postponed last year, Pujara had average returns in the first four tests as well with just two fifties and no big scores in eight innings batting at a crucial number three position for India. He has gone close to three and a half years without an international century, the last one coming against Australia in January 2019.

His position in the team has been under question for quite a while now and India tried Hanuma Vihari at number 3 in the last series against Sri Lanka. This inclusion leaves more uncertainty on Vihari’s role in the team for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Pujara would be hoping to continue with his recent good form notching two centuries and two double centuries in his last five games playing for Sussex in the English County.
