The first ever Test match between England and Australia was played back in 1877, but the legacy of the Ashes started nine matches later in 1882. Only one match was played at The Oval in London and it was comprehensively won by England. Thereafter, the tournament has grown leaps and bounds and the rivalries can be seen, both on and off the field of play.

Apart from cricket, verbal and physical altercations have also been seen a plenty of times. The last Ashes was played last year in Australia and the home team cantered to a victory by 4-0. The Men in Yellow, captained by Steve Smith, won the first Test in Brisbane by 10 wickets. They followed it up with another victory at the Adelaide Oval by 120 runs.

Thereafter, they thumped the Brits in Perth to take an unassailable lead of 3-0 in the series. Joe Root and Co showed some resilience at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and drew the match. Nevertheless, Australia humbled them by an innings and 123 runs in Sydney to win the series 4-0.  Steve Smith turned out to be the leading run-scorer with 687 runs at an average of 137.40.

In the meantime, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced the upcoming Ashes in 2019 to be played on English soil. The series consists of five matches which will be played over a period of one and a half months. Birmingham, Lord’s, Leeds, Manchester and The Oval are the venues for the encounters. The Poms would definitely want to decimate their opponents after the drubbing they suffered last time around.

Here is the full schedule

First Test: August 1-5 at Edgbaston, Birmingham

Second Test: August 14-18 at Lord’s, London

Third Test: August 22-26 at Headingley, Leeds

Fourth Test: September 4-8 at Old Trafford, Manchester

Fifth Test: September 12-16 at The Oval, London
