The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named the England Lions squad for the tour of the UAE. The team will kick off the series against Pakistan A with one four-day ‘Test’ versus Pakistan A, followed by five A team ‘ODIs’ and two A Team ‘IT20s’. Kent’s captain Sam Billings, who also plays for England and the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, has been handed captaincy duties for the tour. Billings recently led his county to promotion in the County Championship and will hence be high on confidence prior to the tour of the UAE.

Meanwhile, England regulars Jason Roy and Mark Wood will also have a chance to play for the Lions. Roy plays his county cricket in Surrey, while Mark Wood is associated with Durham. The squad also features other names who have had short England stints, including spinner Dom Bess and paceman Craig Overton.

Who else is in the side?

Some players who’ve shown promise at the domestic level have also been given the opportunity to make the leap to the national squad through this tour. Middlesex left-hander Nick Gubbins has been amongst the runs for his side, and so has Worcestershire’s Joe Clarke. Jamie Porter got an England call-up during the recently concluded Test series against India but is yet to receive his maiden Test cap.

In Amir Virdi the England Lions have a promising left-arm spinner who could soon be considered for a spot in England’s Test squad, especially considering Joe Root’s side has been struggling to find a full-time spinner. The Lions tour of the UAE begins with a 4-day game against Pakistan A in Abu Dhabi, which gets underway on November 18. The series ends on the 8th of December.
