England recently concluded their two-month campaign in Sri Lanka and they didn’t return empty-handed by any stretch of the imagination. The Three Lions won the five-match ODI series 3-1 after which they won the one-off T20I in Colombo. The three-match Test series was expected to be a different ballgame altogether and was speculated to be closely-fought.

A few months ago, the Lankans thumped South Africa 2-0 and the Brits were in for a stern test. However, Joe Root and Co didn’t drop the gun and came out all guns blazing. They started with a massive 211-run victory at Galle International Stadium and somehow spoiled Rangana Herath’s party as it was the veteran left-arm spinner’s final international match.

England’s social media goofs up

They followed it up with another resounding show in the second Test at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and won the encounter by 57 runs. They also won the third Test at Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo by 42 runs. Subsequently, they inflicted the Islanders with a 3-0 clean sweep and became only the third team after Australia (2004) and India (2017) to do so.

In the meantime, England’s social media handler made a huge goof up, resorting to a premature celebration. In the fourth innings, Lankans were reeling at 226/9 after which stand-in skipper Suranga Lakmal and Malinda Pushpakumara built a 58-run stand. In the 82nd over, on-field umpire Sundaram Ravi adjudged Lakmal, caught by close-in fielder Ben Foakes.

However, UltraEdge confirmed that the ball didn’t hit the bat and hence, the decision was overturned. The Poms’ social media team posted about their victory when Lakmal was initially given out. Thereafter, they had to delete the tweets and posts on other social media platforms. They had to wait for four more overs after which they could express their delight for their team.
