Ex-UAE skipper Amjad Javed retires from international cricket

"Nothing motivates me to push myself and fight for that position."

Former UAE captain Amjad Javed, on Saturday, announced his retirement from international cricket. He represented  UAE in 15 ODIs and 22 T20Is. The right-hander made his last List A appearance for the UAE against Nepal in December 2017. Javed’s career in international cricket started way back in 2006 when he played in the List A game against Ireland.

In the same year, he made his first-class debut when UAE took on Namibia. One of his most impressive performances came in the 2015 World Cup when he scored 42 and took 3/60 against Ireland. But his valiant effort had gone in vain as Ireland won the thriller by 2 wickets. He had also slammed 63 off just 31 deliveries to help his side qualify for the World Cup in 2015.

Overall, Javed played 81 List A games and 15 first-class games in addition to the 15 ODIs and T20Is, scoring close to 2,000 runs and picking up 154 wickets. Javed revealed his retirement decision on Twitter, writing that it was not easy to take the step before thanking the UAE board and the ICC.

“Never easy but it’s time to take retirement from UAE cricket and enjoy watching it as a fan. Would like to thanks @EmiratesCricket @ACCMedia1 @ICC for providing a platform to lead and represent UAE at the highest level,” wrote Javed.

Reason behind retirement

In an interview with Sport 360, Javed revealed that the decision to retire by his inability to find a spot in the current side, “It is never easy when you have to call it a day. You have to decide at what time you need to retire. At the moment, the team is doing better than two years back. I can’t find a place in the team. Nothing motivates me to push myself and fight for that position,” he said.

He also thanked former UAE coach Aaqib Javed and ex-captain Khurram Khan for helping him during his career, “I thank coach Aaqib and captain Khurram Khan for pushing me and motivating me. I have already achieved the goals I had set for myself as a UAE-born player. I am quite happy with my career,” said Javed.
