India will be playing a total of 13 One-Day Internationals before the World Cup in 2019. They have finally managed to find an able number four batsman in Ambati Rayudu but there is still a lot of deliberation going on for the second wicket-keeping option. There is no doubt that the veteran MS Dhoni will be the first choice wicket-keeper for the showpiece event, a lot is being deliberated over his back-up. Roger Binny, the former Indian cricketer, has expressed his thoughts over the same while also saying that the players should be kept fresh for the World Cup.

Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik are fighting it out for the only spot at the moment. Only one of them will travel to England as the 15-man squad can be named only and India can’t afford to have three wicket-keepers. Things will get clear in the ODI series against Australia as the head coach Ravi Shastri has stressed on getting settled down with the 15 who will play the mega event.

Binny favours Pant over Karthik

Roger Binny, while speaking to CricTracker, felt that the youngster Rishabh Pant should be picked as MS Dhoni’s back-up for the World Cup. He believed that the flamboyant cricketer has done well in the ODIs and T20Is in the limited opportunities and should be given more confidence in the upcoming matches.

“I would go purely on age or youngster. Pant has done well in the shorter formats. He should play the World Cup. Encourage him and give him confidence,” Binny said on the sidelines of an event in Bangalore.

India will next face Australia in the three-match ODI series after which they will travel to New Zealand for 5 One-Day Internationals and three T20Is. The Men in Blue will face the Aussies again in a return ODI series at home.
