Pakistan Cricket Board CEO Wasim Khan has dismissed claims over Babar Azam being unhappy over the 15-member squad selected by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021. The squad was announced on Monday (6 September), and since then, reports were surfacing as to how the Pakistan skipper Babar is not happy with few omissions of experienced players in the team.

The PCB management and selectors have included few youngsters in the team, who apparently do not possess much domestic experience nor exposure in terms of handling pressure situations. This was one of the primary reasons why Babar was upset with the squad selected for the global event set to begin on October 17.

But Wasim has denied any such claims being made by Babar and has said he is fully behind the vision and direction of Pakistan cricket. “It has come to our notice that factually incorrect reports are circulating about the Pakistan national squad environment. The squad for the upcoming international assignments has been announced and our captain Babar Azam is fully behind the direction that is being taken,” Wasim told Cricket Pakistan.

Subsequently, a meeting too was held between few players and expected PCB chairman Ramiz Raja. Wasim opined that there were no concerns whatsoever related to the squad being selected for the T20 World Cup.

“On Tuesday afternoon, some of the players had a healthy and positive meeting with former Pakistan captain and member of the PCB Board of Governors, Ramiz Raja, in which there was a consensus on the brand of cricket that needs to be played in the upcoming series and beyond,” Wasim added.

Important to collectively get behind the squad ahead of T20 World Cup: Wasim Khan

Khan stated that it was necessary to get firmly behind the squad prior to the T20 World Cup so that team has confidence, and stability to perform well during the marquee event.

“It is important that collectively we get firmly behind the squad so that they have the stability, backing, and focus they need before going into the ICC T20 World Cup next month.”

Experienced players like Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Faheem Ashraf were not part of the 15-member squad announced by PCB.
