After going through a tough contest and giving lots of fight, the Sri Lankan team finally pulled off an upset and defeated the English cricket team by 20 runs on Friday. It was the 27th game of the Cricket World Cup 2019 and the two teams were taking on each other at Headingley, Leeds. The home team had stepped onto the field as the hot favourites of the game but ultimately the tables turned and the visitors got better of the opponents.

The Sri Lankan team won the toss and elected to bat first. However, as the game began, this decision soon started to look like a foolish-one as both the Lankan openers were sent back to the pavilion in the first 3 overs itself. Although, a fiery cameo of 49 runs from Avishka Fernando made the doohickeys, a bit better, for the team but once he was dismissed, the things started to look really tough for Sri Lanka.

Then came the experienced Angelo Mathews and arrested the collapsed. The veteran cricketer played a slow-yet-handy knock of 85 runs in 115 balls and took his total to a respectable score of 232 runs. With the kind of scintillating batting line-up, England have, chasing this target seemed too easy of a task. However, the Sri Lankan bowlers, especially Lasith Malinga, didn’t lose hope.

The ace speedster struck the crucial wicket of Jonny Bairstow on the second ball of the second innings itself. He soon dismissed the second English opener James Vince as well. Nonetheless, once Malinga’s first spell was over, the hosts tried to make a comeback but Isuru Udana soon gave a breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous-looking Eoin Morgan.

Once Morgan departed, the English wickets started to fall at regular intervals and players like Joe Root & Jos Buttler failed to contribute for their team. Ben Stokes, albeit, played with a never-say-die attitude and fought till the end, however, a blistering display of death bowling from Lasith Malinga eventually resulted in the lack of support for Stokes. The all-rounder, despite staying not out, couldn’t save his team from the defeat as the Sri Lankan team eventually clinched off a victory by 20 runs and pulled off an unbelievable upset.

After the game ended, the official Facebook handle of the Sri Lankan team posted a FB status, wherein, they asked ICC to already adjudge them the World Cup trophy. The team, though, got mixed responses from the viewers. Below the facebook status, the fans were able to witness clear rifts between Perera & Mathews while Virat used Ben Stokes’s name for a wrong purpose for yet another time.
