India’s woes at the top of the order continued in the second innings as well with the openers back in the hut within the 7 overs of the innings. Their technique has been exposed brutally by the champion swing bowler in these conditions, James Anderson. KL Rahul was promoted to open in this game ahead of Shikhar Dhawan and he has been a huge disappointment so far in the 4 innings he’s played.

Rahul has looked completely out of sorts against the swinging ball in the Tests. He has virtually done nothing after scoring a century in the first T20I of the tour and is struggling to score runs. He batted number 3 at Edgbaston and could only muster 17 runs across two innings. He is rated so high and a lot was expected of him on this tour but so far meek returns have disappointed the fans.

Rahul’s woes in England

KL Rahul edged the ball behind the stumps which he could’ve left in the first innings after the hosts won the toss and opted to field first. He flirted with a harmless delivery outside the off-stump which highlighted the same old problem of the Indian batsmen overseas. There was a hope of him improving in the second attempt as the conditions weren’t so much threatening though there were clouds.

This time around he seemed to have covered the outswinger of Anderson but failed to read an inswinger and was rapped on the pads right in front of the stumps. The umpire’s finger raised almost immediately and his stay in the middle was cut short after playing only 16 balls for 10 runs.

As far as the match situation is concerned, India are currently 17/2 and trail by a massive 272 runs still with Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara fighting it out in the middle. The rain forced the umpires to take an early lunch and if wickets continue to fall, the game might finish on the fourth day itself.
