The selectors, on Monday, announced India’s T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka and Australia respectively. India will play three T20Is against Sri Lanka before taking on Australia in as many 50-over games. The biggest news from the squad selection was the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as well as senior opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Bumrah has not played a competitive game since the end of tour of West Indies as he was sidelined with a back injury. He is a part of both the squads. Dhawan, on the other hand, injured his knee last month while playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and missed the T20I as well as ODI series against West Indies this month.

Among other major news, Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami were rested for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Rohit has been playing non-stop cricket since the start of the year and deserved the rest while Shami’s workload management was also important, keeping in mind the crucial tour of New Zealand in February.

Among players who missed out are Deepak Chahar and Mayank Agarwal. Agarwal was in the ODI team as a replacement for Dhawan and was thus dropped as the latter returned. On the other hand, Chahar has suffered a back injury and is set to remain on the sidelines for a lengthy spell. He was a part of the ODI team for the West Indies series but was ruled out before the third game due to the injury.

Suryakumar Yadav’s absence causes a stir

While the squad announced was more or less on expected lines, some fans were not at all impressed with the BCCI’s decision of not picking up Suryakumar Yadav. The Mumbai star has been one of the best batsmen in the ongoing domestic season and has made a big impression with his finishing abilities. Yadav scored 392 at a strike rate of 168 in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20 and averaged 113 from four innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 tournament.

However, those stats did not change his fortunes as he keeps on waiting for his maiden call-up from the national side. And the fans were furious with the selectors’ decision as they took to Twitter to slam the same.
