MS Dhoni in his early days batted at number 3 and even opened the innings on a few occasions, when the former Indian captain ordered him to do so. That former Indian captain currently is a concerned man at the top of BCCI and it’ll be interesting to see if Sourav Ganguly makes a push on the selectors to make Dhoni open.

Although it has been a long time since he’s done that, he has faced far better bowlers against the new ball than the current lot and the Australian tracks these days are not as cooperative to the bowlers as they once were. The hard new ball will come nicely to the bat and a man of his power and technical superiority could do a fine job.

Dhoni’s two of the finest knocks of his career came while he was batting at the top. One against Sri Lanka at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium and the other came against Pakistan in Vishakhapatnam. So that should be a good point to consider.
