Gautam Gambhir took full responsibility for the losing spree of Delhi Daredevils (DD) and stepped down from the helm for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team has been struggling to win matches and are staring down the barrel after 6 matches this year. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new leader of the team by the franchise as they would be eager to get back to the winning ways. However, Gambhir came up with a tweet clarifying few things after the press conference on Wednesday.

He was bought by the franchise for his base price earlier this year in the auction and was tipped to bring glory for them which has been evading Delhi ever since the inception of the IPL. But things didn’t turn out according to the plan it seems as the team is found wanting mid-way through the season. Now it remains to be seen if they can turn around their year with the new skipper.

What did he say?

Gautam Gambhir cleared that stepping down from the captaincy was completely his call and was not pressurised either by management or the coaching staff. He believed that the team comes first and not the individual. “True, that I’ve stepped down from DD captaincy. Just to clarify it was my call, nothing from the management or coaching staff. I may not be leading from the front but I will be the last man standing for @DelhiDaredevils. No individual bigger than d team. Very much a

It will be interesting to see if he will be able to retain his place now. He has struggled big time ever since starting the tournament with an impressive half-century and has mustered only 30 in next 5 innings. DD will play their next game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday.
