Sourav Ganguly has slashed Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan indirectly for not coming to the terms of conditions in the first Test against South Africa. Both threw their wickets away after getting starts in first and second innings which hurt India at crucial junctures. However, he is backing KL Rahul to play in the second Test as the right-hander has scored in alien conditions before.

While Dhawan scored 16 runs in both the chances he received, Rohit looked good for a period of time before getting out on harmless deliveries. The woes of the visiting batsmen are not new during the overseas tours but now they quickly have to resurrect their techniques if the team has to make a comeback in this series. The other batters like Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara also have to contribute to the team’s cause in the next Test.

It’s like chalk and cheese when they go away

Sourav Ganguly was visibly not pleased with the form of Rohit and Dhawan in the first Test after the team lost while chasing 208 runs in the last innings. “History of Rohit Sharma and history of Shikhar Dhawan in overseas conditions are not very good. You look at their records, it’s like chalk and cheese when they go away and when they are in India,” he said in an interview to India Today on Tuesday. He also picked Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli as the two best players for India in overseas conditions.

The 45-year-old also expressed confidence in the Indian captain and hoped that the performance will improve in the second Test. “So you are basically depending on Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli as the two best performers in overseas conditions. Look at Cheteshwar Pujara. His 13 of 14 Test hundreds have come in subcontinent conditions. I was not surprised by the result. I have tremendous regard for Virat Kohli and we will see an improved performance in the next game,” Ganguly added. Though he didn’t forget to add that KL Rahul will do well in such conditions.

“I keep saying about KL Rahul because he has scored runs in Australia, he has scored runs in West Indies and Sri Lanka. It’s not just about form, it’s also about where people score runs. But let’s not panic too much,” the former captain concluded in style.
