Two unfortunate incidents involving cricket have happened. First, Hoshang Dadiba Amroliwala, affectionately known as “Hoshi” passed away following age-related health issues on Friday, in Mumbai. The authorities at the Parsi Tower of Silence confirmed that the last rites were scheduled later in the day today. The 86-year-old boasted of a career where he played 44 first-class matches, including 38 Ranji Trophy matches for Bombay(now Mumbai) from 1956-57 to 1963-64.

A right-handed batsman and later a leg-spinner too, Amroliwala scored 1782 runs (1410 in Ranji Trophy) and took 14 wickets. He was part of five Ranji finals that Bombay won. He scored 139 in the final against Bengal in 1958-59. As reported by PTI, Amroliwala also played in two Irani Cup games for the then Ranji Champions Bombay against the Rest of India.

Apart from playing for Mumbai in Ranji, he also played for Bombay CM XI, CCI President’s XI, Bihar Governor’s XI, M K Vizianagaram XI and for Tata SC XI in the Moin-ud-Dowla tournament in Hyderabad, which then had the first-class status. Amroliwala also represented the century-old Parsi cyclists club in the local Kanga League A division in the 1950s and 60s.

Madhav Apte, Amroliwala’s captain told The Hindu, “Hoshi was a complete cricketer. If he had played for another State, he would have probably gone on to play for India. He was a terrific fielder. He was a nice man.” His teammates included Madhav Mantri, Polly Umrigar, Rusi Modi, Ajit Wadekar, Dileep Sardesai, Ashok Mankad, Naren Thamhane and Ramakant Desai.

Unfortunate incident in Bangladesh

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, the other unfortunate incident involving cricket took place. Four people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Khalilur Rahman Siam, a 16-year-old from Khulna. On Tuesday, Siam and his friends got into a fight over a cricket match, which led to Siam getting stabbed and beaten badly. He was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition but passed away around 8:20 pm Tuesday night.

Siam’s father Ainul Haque filed a case accusing ten people. Four of them have been arrested by police. The arrestees are between 16-17 years old. As reported by Dhaka Tribune, Khulna Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said during the primary interrogation, the arrestees blamed Siam for triggering the dispute.
