Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull is absolutely unhappy with the way the Kiwi team lost the first T20I of the Trans Tasman series against Australia recently. Playing at the SCG, the visiting New Zealand team succumbed to a 7 wicket defeat. Also, in the match, their skipper Kane Williamson had an awful stay at the crease. He could only score 8 runs off 21 deliveries.

Interestingly, prior to this ongoing series, the Kiwis had lost 2-1 against Pakistan at their home soil. While they had dominated the ODIs and had notched up a whitewash win, the performance in T20Is was far from being impressive. Amidst this backdrop, Simon Doull wants a massive overhaul in the team setup. As per the recent reports in the Stuff.co.nz, Doull has remarked that skipper Kane Williamson and coach Mike Hesson should be axed from the T20 setup.

He wants someone like Martin Guptill to take up captaincy in the shortest format of the game. Also, he feels former cricketer Daniel Vettori will be a good fit as the coach of the T20 side. Vettori has been a successful coach in the IPL and the BBL. He reckons that the selections are going wrong for the team.

“I don’t think we are getting the selections right. I’ve had some concerns for a while. I would like to see Colin de Grandhomme batting higher but it is the selections, not the batting order [which is the problem]. We want dynamic players and should be giving them an opportunity at T20 level,” quoted Simon Doull.

Only condition when Williamson fits in the team

Simon Doull also expressed his desire to see the like of Ross Taylor and Tim Southee make way for players like Anton Devcich and Mark Chapman. He added that if Williamson has to play the shortest format, then he has to open. “If Kane Williamson doesn’t open in T20 he shouldn’t be playing. His record opening is very good – at three and four it’s not that great. But he shouldn’t be in the T20 side, there’s a lot shouldn’t be in the T20 side,” mentioned Doull.
