A month ago on December 4, 2018, Gautam Gambhir decided to release a video in which made the announcement of his retirement. He played his last competitive match for Delhi against Andhra at Feroz Shah Kotla where he grew up playing all his cricket from childhood, in this edition’s Ranji Trophy. He didn’t let his supporters down by any stretch of the imagination and scored a ton in his farewell match.

He didn’t play for India ever since getting dropped after the Rajkot Test against England, but that didn’t affect his fan following by any means. He also celebrated his 37th birthday, scoring a ton in the quarter-final of Vijay Hazare Trophy against Haryana back in October. After his retirement, reports surrounding him joining politics has been doing the rounds.

Recently, the Delhi-born cricketer has decided to open up on the developments and mentioned that he wants people to vote for him if they reckon him worthy of solving their problems and not because he was a renowned cricketer or for any other reasons.

They should not vote for Gautam Gambhir the cricketer

“I do not believe people should vote, if I ever get into politics, because I am a cricketer, if I’ve done something well in my cricket because I talk about armed forces, I talk about being (sic) nationalistic. They should not vote about it. If people believe I can make a change in their lives, they should vote for me,” Gambhir was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview with Republic TV.

“They should not vote for Gautam Gambhir the cricketer. They should not vote for Gautam Gambhir who runs the foundation. They should not vote because I tweet on certain issues….They should only vote if they believe in me and if they believe I can make a change in their lives,” he added.

Gambhir had an illustrious international career from April 2003 to November 2016. He played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 T20Is in which he scored 4154, 5238 and 932 runs respectively. He also played a couple of crucial knocks in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa and the 50-overs World Cup in India in 2011.
