Stats: Puneet Bisht scores a record breaking 343 in the Ranji Trophy

The new entrants to the Indian domestic circuit have been creating one or the other records especially the teams from the North-East States. In the 8th round of the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 season, Puneet Bisht thumped a quick-fire 343 for Meghalaya against Sikkim. Bisht scored the first triple of the ongoing Ranji season as he struck 53 fours and a six for his 332-ball 343 to help Meghalaya post 826/7. Sikkim managed to draw the game with the help of twin centuries from Milind Kumar, who is the only player with over 1000 Ranji runs this season.

1 – Puneet Bisht’s triple ton is the first in first-class cricket in 2018 as he ended the 2nd day (31st December) on an unbeaten 301. Prior to his knock, the highest FC score in 2018 was the 286 by Wasim Jaffer in the Irani Trophy game for Vidarbha.

53 – Number of fours Puneet has hit during his record knock. He also hit a six as a total of 218 runs came through boundaries from his 343. The 53 fours he hit during this innings are the 2nd most by any Indian in a first-class inning. Kedar Jadhav struck 54 fours and also a couple of sixes during his 327 for Maharashtra in 2012-13 Ranji Trophy game against UP.

272 – The 272 runs Bisht scored on the 2nd day of this game are the 2nd most by any player in a single day’s play of a Ranji Trophy game. He went from 29* to 301* on the second day facing 246 balls.

BB Nimbalkar scored 277 runs in a day when he made the record unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra. He went from 24* to 301* on the 2nd day of the match against Kathiawar in the 1948-49 season.

291 – Balls Puneet needed to bring up his triple century; the 2nd fastest known triple century in Ranji Trophy and the 3rd fastest known FC 300 by an Indian. Virender Sehwag’s second Test triple against South Africa in 2008 came off 278 balls while Kedar Jadhav scored one off 286 balls in the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy for Maharashtra against Uttar Pradesh.

343 – Bisht’s 343-run knock is the highest individual innings in first-class cricket by a wicketkeeper. He thus surpassed Minod Ranasinghe’s 342 for Sinhalese Sports Club against Badureliya Sports Club in Sri Lanka’s Premier League Tournament in 2015-16. Overall, his 343 is only bettered by eight players in a Ranji Trophy innings.

826/7 – The total of 826/7 by Meghalaya is the highest by any team in first-class cricket since Somerset’s 850/7 against Middlesex in the 2007 County Championship game in Taunton.

Overall, this is the joint 6th highest first-class total in India and the joint 5th highest in the history of Ranji Trophy. Hyderabad’s 944/6 against Andhra in the 1993-94 Ranji Trophy at the Gymkhana is the highest.

1261 – Sikkim’s Milind Kumar has 1261 runs in the 12 innings he batted from the seven matches this season. Milind scored twin tons in the game against Meghalaya to move onto 5th in the list of most run-getters in a Ranji Trophy season.

He needs 155 more runs in the possibly last match of his season against Arunachal Pradesh to break VVS Laxman’s record of 1415 runs in the 1999/00 season. Milind is only the 3rd player after Laxman (8 in 1999/00) and Kedar Jadhav (6 in 2013/14) to hit six centuries in a Ranji season.
