Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin had his words of praise for the recently retired Younis Khan. On Sunday, Pakistan secured their first test series win in the Caribbean soil. While they made history on Sunday, two legendary batters of Pakistan went into the history book permanently. Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan were playing their last international match. Pakistani cricketers made sure that their departure must take place on a happy note. They gave their 100% to secure a win in a match which was otherwise heading for a draw. Yes, fortune favors the brave, and on Sunday it favored Pakistan.
Shannon Gabriel had a mash rush of blood before facing the last ball of the penultimate over of the day. He went for a out-of-sorts big heave, as the ball took an inside edge and dislodged the bails off. Roston Chase’s 101 not out went in vain, as Younis and Misbah retired from international cricket on a happy note. Younis retired with the honour of being the leading run-getter for his country, with 10,099 runs and 34 tons.
Former Indian national team captain Mohammad Azharuddin uploaded a video acknowledging Younis’s tremendous contribution towards the country. “Younis is a great player. Scoring 10,000 test runs is not an easy task. He has kept himself fit even at the age of 40s. He has remained quick in his running between the wickets, his longevity of play, his contribution for Pakistan cricket is unparalleled,” said Azhar in a video which was specially recorded for Younis Khan.
Azhar had played 99 tests and 334 ODIs for India. He is ‘infamous’ for indulging in the spot-fixing incident. “Younis is not only a good batsman, but also a very good human being, which is most important thing. As a Cricketer you can play for 5 years, 10 years of 15 years…. But after cricketing life, you’ll be known for how good you were as a human being,” added Azhar.
Azharuddin also said that Younis is as great a player as Zaheer Abbas of former Pakistani captain Javed Miandad. He recalled an old memory, and revealed how he once helped his friend to get out of poor form. “I was disturbed to see him struggling in England, so I called him and made few suggestions. I was happy that he listen to me and applied what I said and then scored,” revealed Mohammed Azharuddin.
Azhar’s message was a tribute to the legendary Younis Khan for his dedication for the country and passion towards the game. Many other cricketers have heaped praises on Younis and Misbah, as they were seen in the national colours for the last time on Sunday at Roseau, Dominica.
