England lost the third Ashes Test by an innings and 14 runs. England has conceded the Ashes and the dream to win in Australia will remain as it is until the next tour. Ben Stokes and Joe Root remained not out at the end of day two and it was expected that they might give some significant contribution to England’s second innings total.
However, that didn’t happen as Australian bowlers managed to create enough pressure on the opponent batters. Scott Boland picked a six-wicket haul and won the player of the match award for his bowling figure of six for seven.
Several former English captains were embarrassed over England’s defeat. Former English batter and captain Kevin Pietersen also said a few things regarding England’s collapse in the third Test. Pietersen didn’t criticize the batters but gave them the advice to get away from cricket and not to go for net practice.
“And still NOT blaming the players. It’s the system! And, I’ve been on two 5-0 defeats and they’re horrendous for all! My advice – DO NOT GO TO THE NETS! Get away from cricket & turn up the day of the next game,” Pietersen said in his Tweet.
Ashes was going to be nothing more than a shamble due to England’s recent performance: Kevin Pietersen
Pietersen also mentioned that England’s last few campaigns also ended disappointingly and hence, the same was expected from the Ashes. He said that quarantine and Covid off-field issues were a nightmare for the English team. He also brought up that during India’s tour it was clear that the batters were not able to perform their designated tasks.
“If you thought that this #Ashes trip for the England players was going to be anything less than a shambles, you’ve missed the lead up & you didn’t watch the tour of India! Lead up – quarantine & Covid off field issues a nightmare! India – batters can’t bat,” Pietersen added.
England started its campaign in 2021 with a series win against Sri Lanka and defeated India in the first Test of the away tour. The English team played 12 Test matches after that game and won only a single game. England conceded the series against New Zealand and India before turning up for the Ashes.
