India bagged a classy series win against England after winning the final contest on March 6 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The youngsters of the squad again showed up brilliantly on the occasion and pushed the team to get over the line. A day after India’s stunning victory, Head Coach Ravi Shastri interacted with the media and threw light on various aspects of the game. He was in all praise for youngsters and added that they performed too well under pressure situations.

Shastri heaped special praises on Washington Sundar and Rishabh Pant, who showed some extraordinary skills throughout the series. Pant’s century in the final match against England brought India back from the rough patch, and Sundar’s unbeaten knock of 96 runs shifted all the momentum towards the hosts. The head coach also lauded the way Pant has undergone hard training and drills over the periods of the last few months.

“At 21, I had similar success, what these guys are having at the moment. So I know where they are coming from. After performing well for some time, when you hit a low, that is when your real journey starts. After the IPL, Pant came with a lot of baggage. But he trained harder than anyone. What he has done for India, no one would have done in their entire careers. His keeping was outstanding, the batting and the hard work put in was just brilliant,” said Shastri in the post-match press conference.

In future, we will have a very good number six for us: Ravi Shastri

Shastri stated that the way Sundar has stood up for India, hardly anyone could have done that. He is a perfect find at no. 6 for India and even has the skills to bat up the order. Shastri added that he would either ask the selectors or skipper Dinesh Karthik to make him bat at no. 4 for the state team.

“I think I’m going to ask either the selectors or Dinesh Karthik to make Sundar bat in the top four for his state team. He is that good a batsman, and in the future, we will have a very good number six for us. I think the innings he played here is perhaps better than the one he played in Australia,” he concluded.
