India’s experienced southpaw Yuvraj Singh was once again not selected in the neither of the limited overs squads for the home series against Sri Lanka. He cleared the yo-yo fitness test recently which is a important parameter to get into the national team. But due to missing some games in the ongoing domestic season, he couldn’t get proper game time to get into the reckoning which was also noted by chief selector MSK Prasad. Former India coach and cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad also said that Yuvraj can surely make a comeback after a good performance in domestic cricket.
Yuvraj was dropped from the team after a poor show in the Caribbean and the ICC Champions Trophy in England, due to some consistent failures. After that he was overlooked for the majority of limited overs series because of major fitness issues for which he was also training hard at NCA in Bangalore. Which is why the left-hander finally cleared the fitness test with flying colours but he missed many domestic games in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season that cost him the selection into this Indian team.
Domestic form will certainly help Yuvraj Singh
Former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad stated that Yuvraj needs to get back into form by scoring big runs at the domestic level in order to make a comeback in the national team. He mentioned the fact if the experienced campaigner is fit and performing to the highest levels, then his age is not a considering factor. But as reckoned by selector Prasad and Gaekwad also, he needs to get proper match time along with proper fitness to be on par with this Virat Kohli-led side.
“Yuvraj Singh has to show his form with the bat, score runs at the domestic level now. If he is fit and performing, he can definitely make it to the Indian team irrespective of his age,” said Anshuman in a conversation with International Business Times, India.
Gaekwad also revealed a major point that had Yuvraj continued playing the Ranji Trophy this season and then cleared the fitness test. Then the selectors should have certainly thought of picking the 35-year old in the limited overs squad. The former cricketer feels his huge experience of representing the country gives him additional edge in being hunt of selection cases.
“Had he been playing in the Ranji Trophy, scoring runs and then cleared the test, the selectors could have given a thought and may be picked in the limited overs team as well. Now, scoring runs in domestic cricket after having proven his fitness will only make his case stronger. Yuvraj has a greater advantage than many other players in the team as his experience will help India cricket,” he added.
