Dale Steyn broke a lot of hearts when he pulled the curtains down on his Test career. The speedster ended up playing 93 Tests in which he picked up 439 wickets at an average of 22.95 with as many as 26 five-wicket hauls. The speedster ended as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in the longer version. He was an unstoppable force when on the song and terrorized the best in the business.

His intensified celebrations were a testament to the passion he had for red-ball cricket. Steyn used to run in and gave it his all, exactly what the Proteas needed. He made his debut in the format versus England in Port Elizabeth, the very venue where he played his last Test against Sri Lanka earlier this year in February. He was no mug with the bat with a couple of the fifties at an average of 13.59.

Even as he announced his retirement, Steyn talked about his love for Test cricket and hailed it as the best. The seamer was deeply saddened while bidding adieu to white-clothing cricket. However, he also understands the pain of not playing at all. Steyn was clear cut in saying that he wishes to prolong his T20I and ODI career after developing a string of injuries over a couple of years.

AB de Villiers gets emotional on Steyn’s exit

After his retirement, he was lauded for his incredible career. Lately, AB de Villiers, another former Proteas cricketer, who’s plying his trade for Middlesex in the T20 Blast, became emotional remembering the moments he has had with Steyn over their playing careers.

Steyn and De Villiers were also a part of the RCB franchise in the 2019 edition of the IPL. ABD, who bid goodbye last year, hailed Steyn as the greatest ever and also said he’s an even better individual. De Villiers uploaded a photo of theirs on Instagram to play Steyn a tribute.

He captioned the picture and wrote, “Too many memories to mention! We started together many years back and I had the privilege and front row seats of watching @dalesteyn turn into the best bowler of his time. You are the greatest, an even better person and the best team man around. Well done HOOOLiOOOO,”
