Tainted player Gulam Bodi is concerned over devastated on what might the verdict be on January 28th, 2019. The South-African, who pleaded guilty on November 2nd under the prevention of Corrupt Activities Act for playing as a match-fixing intermediary leading up to the Ram Slam T20 competition in 2015, South Africa’s the then T20 competition at the domestic level.

Bodi now faces a possibility of 15 years of imprisonment. Since the South African National Prosecuting Authority has caught hold of this case, the South African could find himself buried under deep waters. Bodi was labeled as the ‘mastermind’ or the kingpin in hatching the plan of match-fixing in 2015. Highveld Lions, his franchise refused to renew his contract in April 2015 and the months that followed, he acted as a recruiting agent.

Bodi’s mastermind plan

Bodi also had approached his franchise’s teammates in a variety of venues such as food outlets, strip clubs, and parking lots. Among them, Vaughan Van Jaarsveld and Craig Alexander had listened out the plan, however, had reported to the South African Cricket’s anti-corruption unit’s Louis Cole, citing the reason as new-found conscience as a reborn Christian had given him the motivation to do so.

According to sources, as quoted by Cricbuzz, the 39-year old is deeply concerned about what sentencing he will be subjected to on January 28th next year. The source was quoted as “He has a wife, three young children, and an ageing mother. He has just found employment through someone in his extended family but these last few months have been a struggle. He is obviously concerned about the prospect of going to a prison.”

However, over the years Bodi has wholeheartedly co-operated with the authorities and showed legitimate remorse as the austerity of his wrongdoing became apparent. He was quoted by the Saturday Star Newspaper, “It’s terribly hard to not be involved with the sport he loved since his banning. I haven’t really settled in the last few years. It’s been a constant battle.”
