One of India’s finest batsmen throughout the 1970s, 69-year-old Gundappa Viswanath has, like many others, opined that Indian captain and run-machine Virat Kohli has “every chance” to break his idol Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries. This has come in the wake up of Kohli’s 35th ODI century which came to South Africa last week. The 29-year-old also became the first batsman ever to score 500 runs in a bilateral ODI series.

Reckoning that records are made only to be eventually broken, the former batsman, who was in Kolkata for a U-14 invitational cricket tournament said that with the kind of form Kohli is in, along with his hunger for more and more runs, he is likely to go past Tendulkar. He also mentioned that while Tendulkar’s record can be broken, there is a long journey ahead of Kohli to do it.

“Kohli has shown consistency, performance and is getting hundreds regularly, he has got every chance to break that record, but it’s a tall order,” Viswanath was quoted as saying by PTI. “Records are eventually meant to be broken. I am happy for that and I think even Sachin will be happy. But it is still a long way to go,” he added.

Constant comparisons between Kohli and Tendulkar

Kohli 35th ODI hundred against South Africa was his third of the series and also the first by an Indian batsman in a bilateral series. India, who won their first-ever bilateral series in the rainbow nation, finished the 6-match series with a 5-1 rout.

The comparisons between Kohli and Tendulkar have never subsided. The young captain has already broken several records. Among others, one record that can be mentioned is Kohli 19th Test century during the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Nagpur last year, with which be broke Tendulkar’s record of reaching the milestone in one fewer inning.
