On the occasion of Teacher’s day, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar recalled an incident involving his coach which resulted in a life-altering moment for the Indian legend. The Master Blaster paid tribute to his childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar to commemorate the occasion while he went on a journey down the memory lane to share a story with his fans.

Tendulkar made his debut in international cricket in 1989 and has been earned several world records during his stint. He retired as the highest scorer in Tests and ODIs and is also the only man to score 100 international hundreds and play 200 Tests. The Indian legend was also the first male cricketer to hit a double ton in One-Day Internationals in the course of an illustrious career.

However, while paying tribute to his childhood coach, the Mumbaikar took to Twitter and spoke at length about the incident that “changed” his career. Tendulkar wrote, “Happy #TeachersDay! The lessons you taught me have always served me well. Sharing an incident with you all that changed my life!.”

Down the memory lane

Recalling an incident where his coach scolded him in front of several people for enjoying a match at the Wankhede Stadium instead of playing a match elsewhere, the maestro revealed, “Back in my school days, I used to play only for the junior team and our senior team was playing the Harris Shield finals at the Wankhede Stadium. And our coach Ramakant Achrekar sir had organized a practice match for me. He had told me to go there after school and bat at number four. He said he had spoken to the captain and you would not need to field. That used to be my training. That was important because you needed to figure out your game there and figure out how to score runs in the middle,” he said.

“But I left all of that and sat at the Wankhede watching the Harris Shield final, cheering the senior team, clapping. After the match, I saw Achrekar sir and I thought it would be good to wish him. He asked me how many runs I got in the match and I told him I never went to play it because I wanted to cheer the senior team and clap for them,” Sachin added.

Tendulkar, in his younger days, needed constant mentoring and the two men who stood out were his brother Ajit and coach Achrekar. A notorious kid he used to be a prankster and would often get into trouble for mischief.

He further added, “Then he scolded me a lot in front of everybody and said I did not need to clap for others. He said I should take care of my own game and do something so that one day, the world can clap for you. That was the biggest lesson of my life. After that day, I never missed another match.”
