The Indian Premier League(IPL) started in 2008 with a lot of expectations – to deliver for the fans with entertainment and for the board to deliver financially. The T20 league announced its arrival straightaway attracting numerous crowds to witness both Indian and overseas cricketers playing together. Before 2008, it was only possible when the Asia XI would go head to head with the World XI. The opportunity of watching their favourite players together in a team was fulfilled by IPL.

The Indian Premier League is often greeted by players from the Carribean who set the league on fire with their skills, one of the most important one being their acrobatic fielding skills. Over the years, players such as Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Smith have featured in the tournament and have performed excellently. The success of Windies in the shorter format is credited to all the experience their players have gained in the tournament.

International cricket at a halt?

An internal ICC document, which lists and dates all the major tournaments in the 2019-23 cycle, includes dates for the IPL alongside major ICC events such as the World Cup, the Champions Trophy and the World T20.

According to the dates submitted by the BCCI, which are with the ICC and have been identified in the new FTP, the IPL will be played each year from around the end of March until the end of May. Over five seasons, the only international cricket that might coincide with the league are two series featuring Ireland against Zimbabwe and one where England play a three-ODI series against the Netherlands, the 13th-ranked side in the ODI league. International cricket often witnesses a halt during the phase of the IPL because almost all players from different countries feature in the cash-rich league.

Good for Windies?

The Windies players are often found playing different T20 leagues around the world which affects their national side. According to Khan(Official, CWI) said to Guardian.co.tt, “This has to be good news for the West Indies because many of our top players ply their trade in the IPL. When countries play the West Indies around this time, our side is normally depleted and this cannot be good”.

Cricket West Indies(CWI) has increased the earnings of their players and this should allow the players to represent their national side rather than playing cash-filled T20 leagues around the world.
