The news about the participation of the Indian team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 broke out recently. What this meant was that the board was asked to announce the Indian squad for the mega event soon. Now, with the squad set to be announced on May 8, all players are hopeful to make the cut for the coveted tournament. One among such aspirants is veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh.

As per the recent quotes in the News18, Harbhajan Singh noted that he is very much optimistic about his chances for being selected in the national setup. He remarked that the IPL is a good platform to perform and put up a statement. Harbhajan has been extraordinary with the ball in the limited opportunities that he has got for the Mumbai Indians this season.

“I am as hopeful and positive as any other player would be. IPL is a big platform and the performances here are taken note of. I have rarely missed any limited overs matches this season (be it Hazare Trophy or Syed Mushtaq Ali T20),” said Harbhajan Singh.

However, when asked if he would feel dejected if not picked in the squad, the Punjab cricketer responded a negative. He said that he wishes to wear the national colors but at the end of the day, it all depends on the selectors. This is how the cricket works and he will not be disappointed if not picked for the tournament.

“Not at all. It is selector’s call. Yes, I would be very happy to wear national colours but one tournament is not the end of the road. I am still itching to play international cricket. That was what it was 19 years back and as I reach my 20th year, nothing changes,” said the veteran Indian star.

Talking about his game plans this season in the IPL, Harbhajan cited that he is trying to bowl his stock deliveries more often. Also, in a tournament such as the IPL, the bowlers need to think a step ahead of the batsmen to counter their moves. This is exactly what he has been doing over the years.

“On rank turners, you can push the ball through the air. But I have been bowling slower through the air. Trying to flight and get my stock ball, off-break going. You have to be a step ahead of the batsmen and I believe I have been able to do that. That’s what has been my role for Mumbai Indian in last 10 years,” conceded Harbhajan Singh.
