India went into the Asia Cup 2018, with an aim to solve their No 4 conundrum. Ambati Rayudu, who was making his comeback after a long gap of two years, probably had the final chance to prove himself. The right-hander amassed 175 runs in 6 innings. This sealed the deal and Virat Kohli even declared Rayudu as the final solution for the questions creeping up every now and then about No 4 issue. Kohli’s faith was cemented after the right-hander hammered a century against West Indies.

However, the things did not work as one would have liked to. Rayudu completely lost his form, and at the worst possible time. His away tours to Australia and New Zealand turned out to be a disaster. He disappointed once again when Australia toured India, scoring only 18 runs in three games. One would have still expected him to make the cut due to his vast experience and ability to tackle swing. But he lost his spot to Vijay Shankar, who was termed as a 3-dimensional player.

Vijay Shankar didn’t have a good World Cup either. He scored 44 runs in two matches, before being ruled out of the action for three weeks due to a toe niggle. Unfortunately, this didn’t turn out to be a lucky break for the 33-year-old. Uncapped Mayank Agarwal was selected ahead of him. All these incidents have forced him to retire from all forms of cricket, including the IPL. This retirement has taken aback all the fans.

Bhogle wishes Rayudu best for the future

Renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle has also shown disappointment over his retirement. ” Really feel for #AmbatiRayudu. Always gave it everything he had but sometimes was left holding the wrong cards. So hope he continues in domestic white ball cricket so that we can see his wholehearted style of play in the #IPL. This is an emotional moment but there is a tomorrow,” tweeted Bhogle.

Harsha wished Ambati Rayudu a better future. He indirectly also highlighted Rayudu’s ignorance which has turned out to be a matter of debate. It is ununderstandable that why was an uncapped player picked over him. However, the fans would hope a better future for him, and expect him to play in foreign T20 leagues.
