Veteran South African batsman Hashim Amla is one of the most revered cricketers in the world cricket. Amla is a prolific run getter across the three formats of the game. When team Hampshire signed him for the County season in 2018, they rightly believed they had struck a mega deal. However, unfortunately for the County side, Hashim is heading back to South Africa midway through the season.

The veteran campaigner sustained a knee injury in the month of May this season. Earlier, Hashim Amla did not expect things to be too bad in regard to the injury. With time, the injury seems to have worsened due to which the medical attention has been advised. The Director of Hampshire cricket confirmed the departure as the quotes in The Cricketer. He remarked that the update about Amla is not very positive.

“I can’t say enough positive things about Hashim. He made a brilliant impression and he’s been outstanding throughout that time spent with us, both through his engagement with the club and our young players, as well as the experience and skill he offered with the bat,” the Director of Cricket in Hampshire Giles White remarked.

“It’s easy to see why he’s so well regarded around the world and one of the greats of our era. We wish him well against Sri Lanka and hopefully one day we’ll see him back in Hampshire colours,” he added further.

Dale Steyn announced as replacement

Meanwhile, the club has signed up Amla’s teammate Dale Steyn as the replacement. Steyn has just recovered from an injury that he had sustained earlier this year in a Test match against India. Steyn, through his sting in Hampshire, is hoping to be fit for the Sri Lanka tour. Also, Hashim Amla is seeking medical assistance in South Africa in a bid to be fit for the Sri Lankan tour which commences in July. The tour will be the first international assignment for the Proteas this season.
