‘Have got no demons in my head’- Glenn Maxwell credits mental health break for strong comeback

Glenn Maxwell, the swashbuckling Australian batter, is a more relaxed individual after the mental health break he took back in October. The 31-year-old has said that the sabbatical has helped him immensely. The effects are pretty palpable as the right-hander is currently the second highest run-scorer in the 2019-20 Big Bash League, representing the Melbourne Stars.

In eight matches, he has notched 311 runs at an average of 77.75 with three half-centuries to show for his efforts. Maxwell expressed gratitude to Cricket Australia (CA), saying that he has learned to deal efficiently with things. The Melbourne-born stated that he has a clear head while batting and he is still trying to manage certain aspects of his life in a better way.

“I’m so thankful that Cricket Australia and all the powers that we’re able to grant me that break and get myself right. I think I’m starting to see the benefits now, I’ve got no demons in my head. I’ve been able to get everything off my chest and been able to deal with things better,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“I’m still talking to people about managing different parts of my life and making sure I’ve still got that balance. It’s nice to be a bit more relaxed when I’m batting. I don’t have anything going in the back of my mind, I don’t have any of these other thoughts. It’s been nice and calm out there,” the Victorian added.

On Friday, Maxwell’s thunderous 45-ball 83 helped the Stars to victory against the Melbourne Renegades at the Docklands Stadium. The Stars were under pressure while chasing, crawling at 54 for three in the seventh over. But Maxwell, who’s also the Stars’ skipper, absorbed the pressure and took his team over the line with eight balls to spare.

Maxwell’s decent run of form has also rubbed off positively in the team as the Stars are the table-toppers after winning seven out of their eight matches. Maxwell isn’t a part of the national squad that will be playing a three-match ODI series versus India, starting January 14.
